Saturday 29th February – Celebrating Thinking Day
Today we joined around 100 Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers from our District to attend our District World Thinking Day celebration. Daffodil, Daisy and Snowdrop plus 13 of our Brownies had a great morning doing activities based on Mexico which is home to our World Centre Our Cabaña. Our Cabaña is the largest of the 5 World Centres of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. Opened in 1957, it is located in the “City of Eternal Spring”, Cuernavaca, Mexico.
On arrival, the girls went to their unit’s table and were given a blue or yellow sticker to denote what group they would be in. While waiting for everyone else to arrive they completed a World Thinking Day themed word search and coloured in a Mexican themed picture. The yellow group consisted of our youngest Brownies: Eloise, Ellie T, Gracie, Isla J, Jasmine and Lilly; while the blue group had our older Brownies: Amelia W, Amelia D, Chloe, Paige and Trevor. We then gathered into a huge circle while Maddy, the event organiser completed the welcome speech and explained what we’d be doing. We then split into our 2 groups:
Yellows – Craft. All the Brownies made a flower headband. They made the flowers, attach ribbons and put it all together to make a beautiful headband.
Blues – Dancing. We had a professional Salsa dancing instructor come and teach us the basics. We had a wonderful dance lesson before bringing it all together for one big dance.
Halfway through the morning we swapped sessions and had a quick refreshment break with squash and biscuits and continued our word searches. However, all too soon, it was time to go. So, to finish off we sung some songs, laid our shiny 50p pieces on the World Map (which will be donated to the Australian Bush Fire Fund) and then renewed our Promise and we sang the goodbye song.
The Brownies had a great time – they, Daisy and Snowdrop particularly enjoyed the dancing. A big Brownie thank you to our District Commissioner, Sarai, and Maddy for organising and running the day. Thank you also to Gracie for her beautiful colouring in which she gave to the Leaders. Photos will be uploaded later in the week. The lovely World Thinking Day Badges will be handed out at our weekly meeting next week 🙂
