Monday 28 September – Pretty Butterflies!

The theme for this week’s virtual Brownie meeting was butterflies.  It was Group 1’s session so they got to try out the activities first.  We started with the Register before a quick catch up and joke sessions while waiting for everyone to join us before starting the UMA “Life Cycle Survival”.  The aim of this UMA was to discover how crawling caterpillars become fluttering butterflies. This UMA was adapted to best suit our Virtual meeting so we started by listening to the story of the Curious Caterpillar which included the 5 stages of a butterfly’s life.  The Brownies had to do actions based on certain words of the story:

EGG: Curl your hands up into fists
CATERPILLAR: Wiggle with elbows tucked in making munching sounds
LADYBIRD: Pretend to drink tea with a little finger sticking out
BEE: Buzz and flap your hands like tiny wings
GRASS HOOPER: Do tiny seat jumps in your seat like you are hopping
BUTTERFLY: Gently flap your arms as if you are flying away

This went very well and the Brownies enjoyed the story and completing the actions along the way.  We finished with time to spare before our break so played a couple of games.  We tried pass the pen again, played the Name that Cake Quiz and Simon’s Says.  The Cake quiz was fun, pretty easy except 2 that we got stuck on:
What cake is found on the ocean floor?  Sponge Cake
What kind of cake is an animal which is found at the bottom of the sea (savory not sweet!) Crab Cakes

We finished off with a quick round of cards. Higher or Lower.  Daffodil held up a huge playing cards and the Brownies had to guess if the next one would be higher or lower.

During the break, the girls made a model to represent the butterfly’s life cycle.  This was a circle divided into 4 with a piece of rice to represent the egg, twisty (fusilli) pasta to represent the caterpillar, tube (penne) pasta to represent the chrysalis and finally butterfly (farfalle) pasta to present the butterfly.  These were super easy to make.  After the break, it was time to do our second craft: an easy butterfly origami.  We did this together but the Brownies also had instructions to follow if their internet connection was lost plus we ran a video of the craft being made.  This went quite well though we had to pause the video a few times to catch up but it helped the Brownies make their beautiful paper butterflies.

We played hangman with the use of the zoom whiteboard.  The girls almost lost the 1st game which was Frozen but got it just in time.  Daisy picked the next film; Moana which was easy and we finished with Buttercup’s pick of Nanny McFee.  We showed off our life cycle crafts before finishing with our farewell song.

Well done girls and see you all in 2 weeks. Group 2 will meet next week; Zoom invites will go out Sunday so please check your SPAM folders.  Have a great weekend everyone.
