Monday 6 September – We’re Back!!

After a long 18 months away we are over-the-moon to be finally back together again where we belong, meeting at RAF Waddington.  Our Brownie group is now 22 girls strong, along with a most fabulous team of Leaders and helpers. Most of our girls hadn’t been to the meeting place before, so Daffodil sent out maps and instructions so that everyone could get there safely. With strict guidelines from the RAF and Girlguiding, we also put some new COVID rules in place. Before entering everyone sanitised their hands and had their temperature taken with Daffodil’s super-duper laser thermometer.

Daffodil has spent a huge amount of time completing a lot of COVID-related paperwork and risk assessments. It’s not a case of just turning up with a bucket of alco-gel and crossed fingers. Everyone has to be satisfied that we are doing our utmost to protect all of the unit, along with anyone who may be using the hall after us.

Having said that, the ongoing situation is definitely not going to stop our brilliant Brownie adventures. We welcomed everyone back (our pre-lock down girls plus all those who joined us on zoom) and say a big Brownie hello and welcome our latest new joiner Charlotte. We explained how we traditionally run our meetings and reminded girls of our “quiet” sign. We gave out the song words to all those who didn’t know and hummed our welcome song along with Daffodil and Buttercup who, as they wore masks, sang it.

First job of the day was to award new Sixers and Seconds with their special shiny badges. Congratulations to Isla and Darcy; Aurora and Jasmine; Sophie and Gracie; Kitty and Florence on their very important new roles. We gave out welcome packs to Charlotte, Grace and Darcy and Adventure Books to those that didn’t have them. Lastly, every girl was also given her own pencil case to bring to every meeting. They are stuffed full of pencils, glue, scissors and colouring pens, and everyone is responsible for looking after their own. Six points will be deducted for anyone who forgets to bring it!

As well as all the admin and catching up we did, of course, have time for some games. Our fabulous new Brownie Helper, Emily (otherwise known as Blue Cheese), along with lovely parent helpers Hayley and Mrs Cheese, led an inventive ice breaker session. The game involved eating sweets and chatting – two of our most favourite things to do.  We also had a pow wow to vote on what Skills Builder badge we would like to do next term. Daffodil took all the results home with her and worked out that Lead Stage 2 and Lead Stage 3 where the most popular choices with most voting “yes”, a few “not sure” and zero “no”. We played games for the rest of the evening.

Just before it was time to finish, we presented lots of awards. Many of the girls had badges for taking part on the Lincoln Imp trail over the summer, taking photos to prove they had done it. Well done Amy, Ayda, Charlotte, Darcy, Eliora, Florence, Grace Holly, Isabel, Jasmine, Mia, Paige and Sophie. We also awarded the Birds of the World Challenge badges to those who completed it over the summer holidays. Well done Ayda, Charlotte, Holly, Isabel, Mia & Paige. We presented a 1st anniversary badge to Eliora and a 2nd anniversary badge to Mia. Lastly, Jasmine was voted by the rest of the Brownies as this week’s Weekly Best Brownie.  Well done Jasmine who received a lovely certificate and got to take home the trophy and Brownie doll mascot for the week.  Charlotte took home our penguin mascot.

Our last activity was to hum our farewell song before saying goodnight. The girls went home with lots of information and forms – consent forms and data checks do need to be returned next week please.

That’s it for now, see you next week.  Blog by Buttercup.
